Learning how to write wedding vows is mostly about getting out of your own way. Here is a three-step framework that works whether you have a month or an hour.
1. Start with one memory
Open with a specific moment — the first time you met, a favorite trip, a small kindness. Specificity is what makes a vow feel real instead of generic.
2. Say what you love about them now
Move from the memory to what you love about your partner today — the quirks, the steadiness, the way they make ordinary days better. Keep it to two or three things.
3. Make your promises
End with promises. Not just “in sickness and in health” — your own. The things you will actually do, every day, for the rest of your life together. Two or three is plenty.
Bonus: read it aloud
If it takes longer than two minutes to read aloud, trim. The best vows feel like a conversation, not a speech.
